Second-seeded Chilean Fernando Gonzalez recovered from a set down to defeat Italian Filippo Volandri 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in one hour and 31 minutes and progress to the second round of the BA-CA TennisTrophy in Vienna.
The 2006 finalist (l. to Ljubicic) converted on five of eight break points and hit three aces in battling past World No. 45 Volandri, he will next face qualifier Roko Karanusic or unseeded Jiri Vanek.
World No. 6 Gonzalez has had a career-best season, reaching his first Grand Slam final at the Australian Open (l. to Federer) and making the final at ATP Masters Series Rome (l. to Nadal. The 27-year-old struggled in the summer and didn't win a match after Wimbledon, until bouncing back in Beijing recently to capture his eighth ATP title. He now improves to 39-18 for the season.
